Herbert started playing guitar at 14. His first paid gig was with his high school band as part of the Battle of the Bands on his final day of his senior year. His band won third place, earning $25.
Herbert began getting into metal in 1986 with a bent towards Motley Crue, Dokken and Ozzy Osbourne. He became interested in Megadeth and Metallica before he started playing the guitar. He cited Beethoven as his top influence in classical music.

Herbert’s personal publicist has released a statement revealing Oli’s cause of death. The statement released by the publicist reads, “On behalf of Oli’s wife and family I can confirm that Oli Herbert passed away yesterday unexpectedly as a result of an accident which occurred on the property of his home. He was 44 years old. No further details are being released at this time. Funeral arrangements are pending and will be announced once that information is available. The family requests for privacy during this time but does wish to express their appreciation to fans worldwide for the outpouring of condolences.”

According to TMZ, Oli was found dead in a pond near his Connecticut home. Oli was reported him missing and police were dispatched to his Stafford Springs home. They searched the area and found Oli in a nearby pond. The police say that the death does not appear suspicious, but an autopsy needs to be performed to confirm the manner and cause of death.
