Nicola Adams OBE is a British former professional boxer. She went to Agnes Stewart Church of England High School, Ebor Gardens, Leeds. After graduating from high school she was enrolled at Hopwood Hall College in Rochdale. In 2007, Adams became the first English female to win a medal in a major tournament, winning a Silver medal at the bantamweight (54kg) division at the European Championships in Denmark. She also won a Silver medal at the world championships in Ningbo, China, in 2008. She suffered a back injury thus staying away from the sport for several months In 2009. She marked her returned at the 2010 world championships in Bridgetown, Barbados, winning a Silver medal, competing at flyweight (51kg). She won the gold medal at both the 2012, London Olympics and at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics, in the flyweight division.
She represented Haringey Police Community Club at boxing. Fortunately, she won all sets of amateur championships she competed at, including the Olympics, Commonwealth, and European games, and the European Union championships. She won her first bout at the age of 13. In 2003, she became an English amateur champion for the first time. She retained the title at the next three championships. In 2011, she won Gold at the European Union Amateur Boxing Championships Katowice, Poland. In July 2011, the BBC included Adams in a feature on “6 Promising Britons to watch in the Olympics”.
In 2017, Adams turned professional, having signed with promoter Frank Warren. She made her debut on 8 April, scoring a four-round points decision victory against Virginia Carcamo at the Manchester Arena. She is openly bisexual, and was named the most influential LGBT person in Britain by The Independent in 2012 and has been included in the annual Powerlist, recognition as one of the most influential people of African/African-Caribbean descent in the UK. She also became the first openly LGBT person to win an Olympic boxing Gold medal, after her win at the 2012 Summer Olympics.
