Mike Bell (full name Michael John Bell) was an American professional baseball third baseman and coach. He played in Major League Baseball (MLB) for the Cincinnati Reds, and was the bench coach of the Minnesota Twins during the 2020 season.

He was originally a first-round pick with the Texas Rangers in 1993 after graduating from Moeller High School. He spent a lengthy Minor League career from 1993-2005 in the Rangers, Mets, Reds, Rockies, D-backs, White Sox, and Cardinals organizations. He would reach the majors with the Cincinnati Reds as a 25-year-old in 2000, hitting .222/.323/.444 with two home runs in 19 games.

He retired after the 2005 season and moved into non-playing roles. He spent 13 seasons with the Arizona Diamondbacks, serving first as a minor-league manager and eventually becoming their vice president of player development before departing to join the Twins.

His loss leaves a huge hole in our hearts but his impact cannot be overstated and his legacy will not be forgotten. Mike brought authenticity and positive energy to every interaction he had, both on and off the field, and he was a true leader in the game of baseball that has embraced his family for three generations. Our deepest condolences are with Kelly, his children, Luke, Mikayla and Madeline, and the entire Bell family.”

Reds owner Bob Castellini said in a statement: “Our Reds family is overwhelmed with sadness for the Bells as they mourn the loss of Mike. This great baseball family blessed thousands of people over the 70 years it has devoted to our game. Mike Bell Cause of Death

Mike Bell’s cause of death was kidney cancer. The Minnesota Twins announced in February 2021 that Bell had been diagnosed with kidney cancer during the offseason and had undergone a surgical procedure on January 28, 2021, to remove the growth and surrounding tissue. After undergoing the surgery, he took time off to recover at his home in Arizona. “He’s also very, very optimistic and also very encouraged and waiting for his return to the dugout,” Twins manager Rocco Baldelli told reporters at the time. “The situation, it’s obviously serious, but Mike has handled this with great courage.”
