Michele Ridge is the wife of Tom Ridge, the 43rd Governor of Pennsylvania (1995-2001), and the first U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security. During her tenure as First Lady of Pennsylvania, Michele Ridge became a champion for children and families. Through her leadership as Chair of the Children’s Partnership and with the support of her husband, then-Governor Tom Ridge, she oversaw the development of one of the nation’s most effective statewide prevention models. Her strategy included shifting public policy toward prevention, coordinating multiple public and private efforts and committing resources to only the most effective evidence-based programs – including Nurse-Family Partnership.

Ridge provided a legacy for Pennsylvania families, which continues to have impact today. Born in Erie, Pennsylvania, Ridge, her brother William, and her sister Maureen lived throughout the country and abroad as a result of her father’s military career. Former Pennsylvania governor and U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Tom Ridge suffered a stroke on June 16, 2021, at his home in suburban Washington, D.C. According to the Ridge family, Tom was transferred by ambulance to a hospital in the Washington, D.C. area after having suffered a stroke at his residence in Bethesda, MD. He was conscious when he arrived at the emergency department and later underwent a successful procedure to remove a blood clot.

In November 2017, the former Pennsylvania governor suffered a heart attack, Tom Ridge’s wife, Michele Ridge, confirmed in a statement.

“The outpouring of prayers and support for Tom has been overwhelming and incredibly meaningful to me and to the entire Ridge family,” she said at the time. “Tom is now in the early stages of recovery from a heart attack he suffered at his hotel Thursday morning. I want to thank the first responders who, as I’ve learned in the last 24 hours, worked heroically to get Tom from the hotel to the trauma center. That’s where the ER physicians, nurses and cardiac team at Dell Seton Medical Center at The University of Texas took over. It is difficult to find the right words to appropriately thank all of the men and women who continue to provide Tom with such tremendous care. I am thankful Tom was in Austin when this happened and close to world-class medical facilities.”
