Mel Coleman Biography – Mel Coleman Wiki

Mel Coleman was a professional yachtsman and investment banker. He is the late husband of Annabel Croft, a British former professional tennis player and current radio and television presenter. Coleman participated in the America’s Cup and the Admiral’s Cup.

In 2009 Croft and her husband Mel Coleman launched the Annabel Croft Tennis Academy at the National Tennis Centre. After Covid lockdowns, the pair converted an old delivery van into a mobile home and took it around the country and into Europe on walking holidays together.

In August 2023, Croft was announced as a celebrity contestant on the twenty-first series of Strictly Come Dancing. The tennis star revealed her husband was a huge fan of Strictly. She said: “My husband absolutely loved it. He used to call me over if I was cooking, and he was crying watching it. So, I hope he’s watching.”

She added: “I just think, what an amazing time to try and find some joy, and just to be thrown into something to take your mind off things. I know it is a competition, but to me it’s like yoga, where you just think about what you’re doing on the mat, and just try to improve yourself. That’s my attitude anyway.”

On the Strictly launch show, as she burst into tears, Croft told her pro dance partner Johannes Radebe: “I just wish you had met my husband, because I have these flashbacks to our house and him watching you with tears running down his face. Honestly, it’s so special, it’s beyond anything I could put into words.”

The former British number one recalled how she met her future husband by chance when she was at a crisis point.

At the age of 21, Croft was at the US Open having a pep talk from fellow player John Newcombe, who suggested that she should think about what she wanted to do with her life as she seemed unhappy. “As we were having this chat, I got a text from my mother saying the BBC production office in Belfast were asking whether I’d be interested in filming a programme about yacht racing.

“I’d never been on a yacht before, but it ended up with me, Eamonn Holmes and Peter Skellern going off to Guernsey to shoot a programme where we learnt how to race a yacht.”Mel, who had just got back from Australia after the America’s Cup, was one of the yachtsmen and that is how we met.

“After a day’s filming we’d all go to the pub, have dinner – it sounds weird, but I’d never really done that. And I remember thinking, gosh this is really fun and normal, and I want a bit more of this rather than getting up and putting on a tracksuit and stressing about whether my backhand is working today.”
