Matthew Hoppe is an American professional footballer who plays as a striker for Bundesliga club Schalke 04. He signed with Schalke 04 in June 2019. Hoppe, who was originally committed to San Diego State University, joined FC Schalke 04 on July 1, 2019. On November 28, 2020, he made his professional debut for Schalke in a 4-1 defeat against Borussia Mönchengladbach in the Bundesliga. On January 9, 2021, he scored a hat-trick, and his first senior goals for Schalke, in a league match against Hoffenheim. He became the first American to score a hat-trick in the Bundesliga.
Prior to joining the Royal Blues, the 6’2″ forward played at the Barcelona Residency Academy USA in the Development Academy Southwest Division. He joined the Academy in its inaugural 2017/18 season. In the 2017/18 U.S. Soccer Development Academy season, Hoppe was the fourth-leading goal scorer in the U-16/17 age group scoring an impressive 24 goals in 30 games in his first season as a striker. He helped lead Barca Residency Academy to a third-place finish in the DA Playoffs, earned DA West Conference Best XI honors, and was named a 2018 United Soccer Coaches Youth All-American along with former teammate Julian Araujo.
In the 2018/19 season, he scored 29 goals in 23 matches, helping his side finish top of the league with a +36 goal difference. That season, he logged an impressive five hat-tricks, two coming in one weekend on the road in back-to-back games against Nomads SC and LA Galaxy.
