She attended Cornelia Connelly High School in Anaheim, California. She went on to Arizona State University.
The Fualaau-Letourneau saga began in 1996 when Fualaau was a sixth grader in Burien. Letourneau had Fualaau as a student when he was in second grade, and they met again when she taught a sixth grade class.
Letourneau went to jail in 1998 for having a sexual relationship with Fualaau beginning when he was 12 years old and she was his 34-year-old teacher.
Letourneau was eventually sent to jail and served more than seven years in state prison on child rape charges. As part of her sentence, Letourneau was ordered to have no contact with Fualaau, but he successfully petitioned the court to rescind that part of her sentence.
