Luke Egan Biography – Luke Egan Wiki

Luke Egan is an Australian former professional surfer and coach. For over two decades, Luke was one of the world’s leading professional surfers. He contested the ASP world tour for 22 years and enjoyed enormous success, winning four world tour events; the Quiksilver Pro in 1997, Quiksilver Pro Fiji in 2000, Boost Mobile Pro pres by Billabong in 2002 and Billabong Pro Mundaka in 2004. In 2000 he finished runner-up in the world title race and finished in the top 5 five times over the course of his career.

Luke worked closely with a number of sponsors and diverse brands throughout his career as an ambassador, including with Billabong, Electric, Boost mobile, Swatch watches, Reebok and Kellogg’s.

Outside of competition Luke was seen at his best in surf movies including Jack McCoy’s ‘Bunyip Dreaming’, ‘Green Iguana’, ‘Sik Joy’ and ‘ The Billabong Challenge’.

Opportunities with his long-term sponsor Billabong and a desire to bow out while he was still on top were behind his decision to retire from competitive surfing at the end of 2005.

In 2006 Luke took on the role of marketing manager with Billabong. In this position he led the marketing department both in the office and on the road, continually learning and further developing his understanding of business and the surf industry. During this time he also held the role of Contest Director for Billabong’s major surf events at high performance locations around the world including Rio De Janerio Brazil, Teahupo’o Tahiti, Jeffery’s Bay South Africa and Pipeline, on the North Shore of Oahu. Luke was also the contest director for the World Juniors at Narrabeen in Sydney for four years.

In November 2008, Luke launched a new career as an elite coach, working with Joel Parkinson on the ASP World Tour. The partnership was immediately successful: Joel won the Hawaiian Pro at Haleiwa and secured the Triple Crown, a title he went on to win for the following two years.

At the beginning of 2009 Luke helped Parkinson take out the first two events of the year: the Quiksilver Pro and the RipCurl Pro Bells Beach. His victory at the Billabong Pro at Jeffrey’s Bay in South Africa later that year secured him a huge lead on the ASP rankings. Unfortunately Joel suffered an ankle injury late in the season, dashing his hopes of a world title, but he still finished the year in 2nd.

Luke continued coaching Joel for another two years with great success, before returning to his role exclusively directing Billabong’s major surf events around the globe.

In 2016 Luke began coaching Courtney Conlogue, one of the rising stars on the WSL women’s tour.

Outside of his professional surfing career Luke has been involved in a number of property development ventures including Komune Resorts in Bali and on the Gold Coast.
