Katherine Diaz Hernandez was a 22-year-old surfer from El Salvador. She was a member of El Salvador’s national surfing team and also a member of the Salvadoran Surf Federation. She also worked as a chef and had opened her own business in El Tunco.

Katherine Diaz Hernandez was killed by lightning on a beach in El Salvador, the Salvadoran Surf Federation confirmed. She was practising near her home at the Pacific coast beach of El Tunco when she was hit by lightning. Emergency services tried to revive her on the beach, but the attempts were unsuccessful.
According to Spanish newspaper AS, a sudden change in weather had caught those on the beach by surprise: “the sky was clear and it was an unforeseen storm that did not seem to carry much electrical intensity either.”
She was training for the 2021 Surf City El Salvador World Surfing Games, set to be held from May 29 to June 6 2021 in El Salvador, that serves as a qualifying event for the Tokyo Olympic Games where surfing makes its Olympic debut (the Summer Olympics Games will begin on July 23, 2021 and end on August 8).
The Salvadoran Surf Federation said in a post paying tribute to Katherine Diaz on social media: “A great athlete who has represented our country has left us. See you soon, great warrior. El Salvador is in mourning.”
The International Surfing Association paid tribute to Diaz in a Facebook post. “It is with a heavy heart that the ISA has learned about the passing of El Salvador’s Katherine Diaz,” read the statement. “Katherine embodied the joy and energy that make surfing so special and dear to us all, as a global ambassador of the sport. She excelled at the international competition level, representing her country with pride at both the ISA World Surfing Games and ISA World Junior Surfing Championship.
“We send our heartfelt condolences to Katherine’s family, the surfers of El Salvador, and to all those in the international surfing community whose lives she touched. We will never forget you.”
