John J. Murphy III is a judge of the Circuit Court for the Seventeenth Judicial Circuit, Broward County. 17th Judicial Circuit judges handle criminal felonies, juvenile, family and probate cases, as well as civil disputes. They serve six-year terms.

John J. Murphy III was elected as a Broward Circuit Judge in November 2002, ousting incumbent Judge Joyce Maines Julian.

“If elected, I look forward to enjoying a job that I know, if done properly, can make a difference in people’s lives on a daily basis. I will make it a priority to perform the duties of judicial office impartially and diligently,” John J. Murphy III said at the time of his judicial election. “I have a great respect for the judiciary, as I do for the voters who would place their confidence in me with their vote, and I want to ensure that the public never loses confidence in a judge’s ability to be fair, impartial, diligent and dignified.”

He was sworn in as a Broward Circuit Judge in January 2003. He was re-elected in 2008, 2014 and was unopposed for a third term in 2020.

Prior to being elected a Broward Circuit Judge, he run his Hollywood law firm, John J. Murphy III, since 1996. He had stints at Pallotto, Hayson & Murphy, 1986 to 1996; Murphy’s own law firm 1982-1986; Pallotto, Weir & Hayson, 1978-1982; assistant state attorney, Broward County, 1977-1978.

John J. Murphy III graduated with an undergraduate degree from Villanova University, Pa., in 1974. He earned a law degree from Stetson University College of Law, St. Petersburg, in 1977.
