Jimmy Hannan was an Australian radio and television personality, variety show host, singer, actor and game show host.
Hannan’s first appearance on the small screen was as a 18-year-old, appearing on Name That Tune as a contestant in 1956.
From 1963 to 1967 Hannan hosted music show Saturday Date, which early on featured Olivia Newton-John and Billy Thorpe.
In 1965 Hannan won the Gold Logie for the most popular personality on Australian TV.
Hannan then went on to release his own record. “Beach Ball”, penned by Roger ‘Jimmy’ McGuinn, famously featured backing vocals from the Bee Gees, and reached number two on the Australian charts.
Aged 50 he retired to a farm in Bellingen, NSW, with his wife. In 2015, he donated a wealth of memorabilia to the National Film and Sound Archive of Australia (NFSA), including photographs, audio recordings, film and video recordings, scripts and sheet music.
According to the National Film and Sound Archive of Australia, at the height of his career in the mid-1970s, Hannan was recording 13 television appearances a week, plus radio in Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane.
