Jerome van den Berghe is a musical director, arranger and keyboard player. Originally from Marlow, Buckinghamshire, Jerome is a contestant on MasterChef UK 2024.
He told the BBC about his earliest cooking memory: “The two dishes I remember making when I was young were hot buttered toast and pineapple upside down cake, and I remember being equally proud of both of them. I mostly developed my skills by watching my dad cook when I was younger and wanting to cook the same things he was making.”
Describing his style of cooking, he said: “I like making food that tastes great and gets people around a table. I really enjoy incorporating elements from a variety of cultures and working with bold flavours to create dishes people will remember. For me, food is all about bringing people together, by making delicious food you can create a great atmosphere that leads to memorable moments.”
Jerome graduated with a BMus (Hons) in Music and Sound Recording from the University of Surrey before gaining an MA with a distinction in Musical Theatre Creative Practice (Musical Direction pathway) at Arts Educational Schools London. He has worked in the music industry for the past 10 years in a wide variety of roles.

34-year-old Musical Director Jerome van den Berghe is a contestant on the 20th series of MasterChef UK on BBC One and BBC iPlayer. He is among the contestants cooking for judges John Torode and Gregg Wallace in the second heat of MasterChef 2024, alongside Louise Lyons MacLeod, Olivia Hall, Peter Cahill, Rana Wadi and Sidney Santiago.
He told the BBC about his earliest MasterChef memories: “Buttery biscuit base! Also, I remember watching the show as a teenager when it was starting out and being inspired by how knowledgeable the contestants were about food, with such variety in their cooking. It really inspired me to want to learn more about different ways to cook. Overall, it’s really given a spotlight to fine dining and allowed people’s cooking skills to develop, comparing the dishes now to what they were even 10 years ago feels like worlds apart. It seems as though every year the standards and skills of cooks goes up.”
Jerome entered the series so “I could share the food I love to make with more people and to have a great experience in the MasterChef kitchen. My brother-in-law also encouraged me to apply!”
His food dream is to “continue being able to cook food for the people I care about and create dishes and meals that bring people together – and make great memories.”
