Jalen Hill was a standout basketball player for the UCLA Bruins from 2017 to 2021. The Corona, Calif. native played 77 games over three seasons for UCLA, starting 40 games, averaging 6.5 points and 6.4 rebounds per game.
Hill played his last game for the Bruins on Jan. 30, 2021, going scoreless in 11 minutes against Oregon State. The team announced the following week that he was sitting out a game against USC for personal reasons.
Hill later said the reason why he never came back to play was due to anxiety and depression after putting excessive pressure on himself to succeed.
“It was a tough decision to make, but once I knew what I had to do, it wasn’t hard, like I figured out, like, this is going to help me,” Hill told the Los Angeles Times in a 2021 interview.
Hill announced his retirement from basketball in April 2021 in a six-minute Instagram video, citing “a bunch of anxiety and depression problems” that started when he was arrested for shoplifting in China before his collegiate debut.
Hill was a star at Centennial High School in Corona, leading the Huskies to the CIF Southern Section Regional Division I championship game as senior in 2017. He was ranked as the No. 47 player nationally in his high school class by ESPN.com.

In 2017, Hill and two other UCLA players, LiAngelo Ball and Cody Riley, were arrested for allegedly shoplifting sunglasses from a Louis Vuitton store in Hangzhou, China.
UCLA said in a statement to PEOPLE at the time: “We are aware of a situation involving UCLA student-athletes in Hangzhou, China. The University is cooperating fully with local authorities on this matter, and we have no further comment at this time.”
The three UCLA players returned home and were suspended for their entire freshman year. Ball ended up leaving the program, while Jalen and Riley returned to the court in 2018.

Former UCLA basketball player Jalen Hill died at the age of 22 after going missing in Costa Rica, according to his family. The family wrote in an Instagram post: “Our hearts are shattered and completely broken to inform family and friends that our beloved son, Jalen has passed away.
“Jalen went missing while in Costa Rica and we have recently learned of his passing. We realize that many will have questions but we are unable to share any details at this time.
“We know Jalen has played a part in the lives of so many people. We also acknowledge the role that so many of you have played in his.
“As we try to navigate this devastating time in our lives, we ask that you please give us time to grieve. Keep us in your thoughts and prayers, George, Tanisa, Tatianna Hill.”
In a tweet, the university basketball team said it is saddened to learn of Hill’s passing and offered condolences to his family.
“Our program is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of former student-athlete Jalen Hill,” the UCLA Men’s Basketball account wrote. “We offer our most sincere condolences to his family and friends during this difficult time.”
UCLA coach Mick Cronin said in a statement: “The news of Jalen Hill’s passing is heartbreaking. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family at this time. Jalen was a warm-hearted young man with a great smile who has left us far too soon.”
