Jake Burton Carpenter was an American snowboarder and founder of Burton Snowboards. After graduating from high school in 1972, Carpenter went on to the University of Colorado in the hopes of making its NCAA Champion Ski Team. A broken collar bone prevented him from trying out for the team and he left the school after one year, returning east to groom and exercise thoroughbred racehorses in Virginia and at New York’s Aqueduct Racetrack, according to Business People-Vermont.

He then enrolled at NYU and majored in economics. Shortly thereafter, he moved to Vermont to start Burton Snowboards in Londonderry in 1977.

According to the Vermont Sports Hall Fame website, “he was part of the first snowboard competition in 1981 and he championed the sport by campaigning to have ski areas open their lifts and trails to snowboarders. He helped organize the first U.S. Open Snowboarding Championship in 1982 at the Suicide Six ski area.”

Carpenter along with his wife, Donna, was inducted into the U.S. National Ski and Snowboard Hall of Fame in 2007 and the Colorado Ski and Snowboard Hall of Fame in 2010. In 2012, they were inducted into the Vermont Skiing Hall of Fame.

Carpenter was credited with championing the sport of snowboarding and helping it to become an Olympic sport beginning at the 1998 Nagano Winter Games, according to WWD.

Jake Burton Carpenter died on November 20, 2019 at the age of 65. The company he founded, Burton Snowboards, confirmed his death in a statement on Twitter. The statement said, “It is with a heavy heart that we share that Burton founder Jake Burton Carpenter passed away peacefully last night surrounded by loved ones as a result of complications from recurring cancer. He was the soul of snowboarding, the one who gave us the sport we love. #RideonJake.”

In an e-mail to employees, John Lacy, Burton’s co-chief executive officer, wrote: “It is with a very heavy heart that I share the news that Jake passed away peacefully last night surrounded by his family and loved ones as a result of complications from recurring cancer. He was our founder, the soul of snowboarding, the one who gave us the sport we all love so much.

Jake Burton Carpenter was diagnosed with testicular cancer in 2011. However, after several months of therapy had been given a clean bill of health. In Novemeber 2019, he emailed his staff saying his testicular cancer had returned.

Carpenter wrote in the email, “You will not believe this, but my cancer has come back. It’s the same tumor as the first time around. We just never got rid of it all. A bit of it hung out in my lymph nodes and got back into business. The odds are in my favor, but it is going to be a struggle for sure.”

He continued, “As much as I dread what is facing me, it’s easier to deal with when you know that you have a family that will carry on. I feel the same way about my company, my friends and our sport. I will be back, but regardless, everything is in good hands, which is an amazing feeling when entering this zone of uncertainty.” He signed the e-mail simply “Jake.”
