Isabel Atkin is an American-born British freestyle skier. In 2018, she captured the first British Olympic medal in skiing, a bronze at women’s slopestyle at the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang. Izzy is also a two-time X Games medalist, she finished in 2nd place at both the X Games Aspen 2018 and X Games Aspen 2021. In 2022, she turned up for the 2022 Winter Olympic in Beijing, China but she later withdrew and flew back home after having an unexpected medical emergency.
Izzy was born in Boston, Massachusetts, and she started learning to ski on Sugarloaf Mountain in Maine when she was a young girl with her younger sister, Zoe. Her mother, Winnie told newschainonline.com in an interview in 2019, “Zoe and Izzy started skiing between my husband’s knees aged two or three. They loved it straight away and it was clear they wanted to do more even at that age. We couldn’t really stop them after that even if we wanted to.” Isabel Atkin’s family later moved to Park City, Utah to support her pursue her skiing dreams. She attended The Winter Sports School in Park City whose academic calendar runs from April to November so that she may ski in the winter. She also attended Colorado College.
Izzy joined the GB Park & Pipe program and began representing Great Britain when she was 15 during the 2013–2014 season. In 2017, Izzy represented Great Britain at the ski slopestyle World Cup competition at Silvaplana and became the first British woman to win a World Cup event in ski slopestyle. She also won the bronze medal in slopestyle at the FIS Freestyle Ski and Snowboarding World Championships 2017 in Sierra Nevada, Spain.

Izzy competed in the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang where she captured the bronze medal in women’s slopestyle. This was the first British Olympic medal in skiing. In February 2022, she did not compete at the Winter Olympics in Beijing, after injuring her pelvis in December 2021 in Colorado, USA.
Izzy had traveled with her sister, Zoe to China for the event but she was forced to withdraw from the competition and flew back home. Her younger sister said, “Izzy wants to keep it private what happened. She had an unexpected medical emergency. She had to fly home which is unfortunate because I wanted her to be here. It’s better to prioritise her health and I’m glad she was able to be here for a couple of days and we got to spend some time together in the Village.”
Izzy had previously said via her Instagram, “Welp… didn’t think I’d be back in a hospital bed so soon but I guess that’s just how it goes sometimes. I managed to cap off a fun week of skiing the amazing @dewtour course with a broken pelvis. There’s a long and painful recovery ahead but I’m already up and walking (with an old lady walker lol) and keeping hope alive for the Olympics in February 🙂 Thanks for all the kind words.”
