Grace Millane was a British backpacker who went missing in New Zealand on 1 December 2018 and her body found on 9 December 2018.
She had embarked on a year-long worldwide trip. She had visited Peru, South America and arrived in New Zealand on November 20 and had been near-daily contact with her family until December 1 – the day before her 22nd birthday.
She was last seen in the center of the city of Auckland, a major city on New Zealand’s North Island, on Saturday. She had been in New Zealand for two weeks and was staying at a hostel in Auckland.
The missing person investigation had tracked Millane entering the four-star City Life Hotel on Queen Street in central Auckland at 9.41pm on 1 December with a male companion. It is the last confirmed sighting of her.
Auckland City Police Detective Inspector Scott Beard said, “The evidence we have located so far, our scene examination, some of the CCTV footage we have, and our investigation, has determined that Grace is no longer alive and that this is a murder investigation.”
Grace Millane’s body was found in the Waitakere Ranges outside Auckland on December 9. On December 10, New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Arden gave a tearful apology to the parents of the British tourist. Jesse Kempson, a 26-year-old man, believed to be her Tinder date, has been charged with her murder.
Millane was from Essex, southeast England and graduated with a degree in advertising and marketing from the University of Lincoln in September 2018.

Millane’s father, David Millane is a millionaire property developer. He arrived in Auckland on Thursday and issued a plea for people to come forward with any information they may have relating to his daughter’s disappearance.
Her family raised concerns after she failed to make contact for several days, including on her 22nd birthday last Sunday. Her father, David Millane, described her as a ‘lovely, outgoing, fun-loving, family-orientated daughter.’
