Gerd Muller (born Gerhard Müller) was a German professional footballer. He made history with Bayern and the Germany national team. He scored 365 goals in 427 Bundesliga appearances for Bayern Munich between 1965 and 1979. The Nördlingen native also won a record seven top scorer’s cannons, and in 1971/72 set a 40-goal single-season record, which stood for 49 years until Robert Lewandowski rewrote the history books with 41 strikes in the 2020/21 season.

On the international stage, Müller scored the winning goal against the Netherlands to hand Germany their second FIFA World Cup title at the 1974 finals. In 1970 in Mexico, where Germany finished third, he claimed the Golden Boot as the tournament’s 10-goal top scorer, and was instrumental in Die Mannschaft’s triumphant 1972 UEFA Euros campaign. Der Bomber produced 68 goals in 62 senior international appearances. It was a national record surpassed only by Miroslav Klose in 2014, who needed 129 games to overtake him.

Der Bomber originally joined Bayern in summer 1964 and won the Intercontinental Cup, three European Cups and a European Cup Winners’ Cup. He was a Bundesliga champion and DFB Cup winner four times each. He was twice named Germany’s Footballer of the Year (1967 and 1969) and won the Ballon d’Or in 1970. His career was honoured by the DFL as part of the Bundesliga’s 40th anniversary celebrations.

After leaving Bayern Munich, Muller moved to the US and signed for Fort Lauderdale Strikers in 1979. He played three seasons there and opened a restaurant, before announcing his retirement in 1982. The media and the public have respected his privacy in this difficult situation.
