Anthony “AJ” Johnson was an American actor and comedian. He is best known for playing Ezal, a drug addict and thief who unintentionally interrupts a heist, in the 1995 movie “Friday,” starring Ice Cube. His other film credits, sometimes as A.J. Johnson, include “House Party” (1990), “Menace II Society” (1993), and “B.A.P.S.” (1997).
He appeared in nearly 50 films and TV shows, including “Moesha,” “Martin,” “Malcolm & Eddie,” “The Players Club” and “I Got the Hook Up” and its sequel. It’s also rumored Johnson was cast to reprise his role in the upcoming “Last Friday.”
In addition to performing standup comedy and acting in movies, Johnson said in 2013 that he had also appeared in plays, and expressed a desire to return to the stage. He said: “It’s like doing standup. I love it. I love the theater. That’s where I’m going back.”

Bell said in a statement to The Los Angeles Times: “The world of Comedy has truly been shaken, again. Our BH Talent family is heartbroken about the loss of the iconic legend of stage and screen Mr. Anthony ‘AJ’ Johnson. He has left with us amazing memories of his laughter, dynamic acting skills, but most of all his enormous personality and heart of gold.”
She continued on Instagram, posting a photo of the comedian and writing, “My hearts hurts.. this one right here. The world lost an icon. a legend..R.I.P. A.J. Johnson.. you will be missed by many on so many levels.”
Following the news of the actor’s death, actors and performers paid tribute to him on social media. Ice Cube, who co-wrote and starred in Friday, wrote on Twitter: “Sad to wake up to the news about AJ Johnson passing away. Naturally funny dude who was straight outta Compton at the same time. Sorry I couldn’t bring your character Ezal back to the big screen in Last Friday…”
