Gavin Escobar was a former NFL player, spending most of his career with the Dallas Cowboys. He attended San Diego State before being drafted by the Cowboys as the 47th pick during round two of the 2013 NFL draft. He also played for the Kansas City Chiefs, Baltimore Ravens, Cleveland Browns and Miami Dolphins. He last played in the NFL in 2018. In his NFL career, Escobar played in 64 games, with seven starts, 30 receptions for 333 yards and eight touchdowns.

Former Dallas Cowboys tight end Gavin Escobar died in an apparent rock climbing accident in California on September 28, 2022.

Escobar was one of two climbers found by first responders at Tahquitz Rock near Idyllwild in the San Bernardino National Forest on Wednesday, authorities said on Twitter.

“Rescuers made access to the location of the victims, both victims perished at the scene,” the Cal Fire/Riverside County Fire Department said.

On Thursday, the coroner identified the two as Gavin Escobar, 31, and Chelsea Walsh, 33. Both Escobar and Walsh are from Huntington Beach.

The Long Beach Fire Department confirmed his death in a social media post: “It is with deep sadness that we announce the off-duty death of Long Beach Firefighter Gavin Escobar. Hired on February 5, 2022, Firefighter Escobar was assigned to Fire Station 3 on B-shift.”

The Cowboys, Aztecs and the LBFD all paid tribute to Escobar and his family on social media.

“Forever in our hearts,” the Cowboys tweeted alongside an image of Escbobar wearing the number 89 shirt. San Diego State Football added, “We love you, Gavin.”

“Our thoughts and prayers go out to Gavin’s family,” SDSU football head coach Brady Hoke said in a statement. “I know his wife, Sarah, and daughters, Josey and Charlotte, were everything to him. Gavin was a great man, father, son and teammate, and will be deeply missed by all.”

“We are devastated to hear about the passing of Gavin Escobar,” SDSU director of athletics John David Wicker said in a statement. “Gavin was the epitome of a student-athlete, and a leader on and off the field. Our thoughts and prayers are with Gavin’s family in this incredibly difficult time.”
