Floyd Cardoz was an Indian celebrity chef and the winner of Top Chef Masters season three in 2011. Born in Bombay, India, Cardoz moved to New York City to work in restaurant kitchens. In 1997, he partnered with famed restaurateur Danny Meyer’s Union Square Hospitality Group to open the contemporary Indian restaurant Tabla. He subsequently opened North End Grill, Paowalla and Bombay Bread Bar in the city. Most recently, he opened The Bombay Canteen and Bombay Sweet Shop in Mumbai, India.

Chef Floyd Cardoz died on Wednesday, March 25, 2020, at Mountainside Medical Centre in New Jersey. He was first admitted to the hospital with a fever on Wednesday, March 18, 2020, and subsequently tested positive for COVID-19.
At the time, Floyd Cardoz said in an Instagram post, “Sincere apologies everyone. I am sorry for causing undue panic around my earlier post. I was feeling feverish and hence as a precautionary measure, admitted myself into hospital in New York. I was hugely anxious about my state of health and my post was highly irresponsible causing panic in several quarters. I returned to New York on March 8th via Frankfurt.”
The Hunger Inc., the company that runs two of Cardoz’s two popular restaurants (the Bombay Canteen and O Pedro) in Mumbai, India, confirmed his death in a statement to Scroll.in. The statement said: “It is with deep sorrow that we inform you of the passing away of Chef Floyd Cardoz (59 years), Co-Founder, Hunger Inc. Hospitality, on March 25, 2020, in New Jersey, USA. He is survived by his mother Beryl, wife Barkha and sons Justin and Peter. Floyd tested positive for Covid 19, in the USA, on March 18th and was being treated for the same at Mountainside Medical Centre, New Jersey, USA.”
Top Chef host Padma Lakshmi paid tribute to Cardoz on Instagram. Lakshmi wrote, “I am beyond saddened to wake up today and hear the news of my dear friend @floydcardoz’s passing. Floyd made us all so proud. Nobody who lived in NY in the early aughts could forget how delicious and packed Tabla always was. He had an impish smile, an innate need to make those around him happy, and a delicious touch. This is a huge loss, not only for the professional food world, but for Indians everywhere. My heart goes out to his wife Barkha and their whole family. RIP.”
New York Times food critic Pete Wells tweeted: “Floyd Cardoz was an exceptional talent, a chef equally at home with undiluted Indian flavors as he was with the delicious union of French, Indian and American food, a personal idiom that he invented.”
