Fatima Farheen Mirza is an American novelist of Indian descent. Her parents are of Indian descent; her mother is from Birmingham, her father from Hyderabad. She attended the University of California -Riverside and is a graduate of the Iowa Writers’ Workshop, where she was a Teaching-Writing Fellow. She is the wife of Riz Ahmed a British actor and rapper. As an actor, he has won a Primetime Emmy Award, National Board of Review Award for Best Actor, Independent Spirit Award for Best Male Lead, London Film Critics’ Circle Award for British Actor of the Year, and received nominations for an Academy Award, two Golden Globe Awards, two Emmy Awards, two Screen Actors Guild Awards, and three British Independent Film Awards. Her first novel, A Place for Us, is a New York Times bestseller and follows as an Indian wedding brings a family back together during which parents Rafiq and Layla must reckon with the choices their children have made. She says she first had the idea for the book when she was 18.
