Elizabeth Holmes full name Elizabeth Anne Holmes, is an entrepreneur and health technology innovator, founder and former CEO of Theranos.

Holmes attended St. John’s School in Houston. In high school, Holmes was interested in computer programming and started her first business selling C++ compilers to Chinese universities. She went on to Stanford University to study chemical engineering. Holmes soon established Theranos in 2003 as a way to ‘democratize healthcare’ with revolutionary blood testing technology that promised to use just a small amount of blood from patients. She subsequently dropped out in March 2004 to focus on the company full-time, using her tuition money as seed funding for it.

Holmes incorporated Theranos in April 2004 and quickly found interest from investors in raising millions of dollars. The company’s value skyrocketed from $30 million (£21.4 million) in late 2004 to a staggering $9 billion (£6.4 billion) by 2014.

Holmes recruited former Secretary of State George Shultz in July 2011 as a member of Theranos’s board of directors and soon became the subject of great media fanfare, being hailed by Fortune, Forbes and other media outlets and even being praised as ‘the next Steve Jobs’ by Inc. She was also named by Forbes as the youngest self-made woman billionaire in the world in 2014, boasting a massive net worth of $4.5 billion (£3.2 billion).

However, Holmes’s fortune soon came crashing down after a 2015 report by the Wall Street Journal raised some serious questions about Theranos’s technology. The report sparked a series of government investigations that caused her wealth to essentially vanish within a matter of months.

She was banned by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services in 2016 and was charged with ‘massive fraud’ by the SEC on March 14, 2018, forcing her to return her company shares, surrender her voting control of the company, not serve as director or officer of a public company for at least ten years and pay a $500,000 (£358,000) fine in order to settle the charges.
