EJ Osborne Biography – EJ Osborne Wiki

EJ Osborne – real name Ethan-James Osborne – was an Australian woodworker and presenter of the BBC daytime TV show Money For Nothing, a show in which dumped items are transformed into valuable pieces. The Australian TV personality hosted Money For Nothing alongside businesswoman Sarah Moore, with the two saving items from the dumping yard and upcycling them for resale.

EJ was born a woman in Australia and lived in Tokyo and Madrid before moving to the UK and settling in Brighton. In an interview with Brighton Transformed he talked about the discrimination he had endured in his home country.

He said: “I grew up in a little isolated Australian country town that was so deeply homophobic it was still illegal to be gay when I was a teenager there. I removed myself from the transphobia, from the homophobia, from my family expectations, from my existing group of friends. I completely started again in a foreign country and a foreign city where I didn’t know anyone and couldn’t speak the language.”

EJ studied Product and Furniture Design, before coming to the realization that designer products for mass manufacture would simply add more ‘stuff’ to an already overburdened family. After a career break to start a family, EJ started to get the ‘maker’s itch’ – and the itch to make something soulful and meaningful that led to spoon carving. Carving spoons felt so good that EJ did it all the time, and run workshops, as well as having spoons stocked in Anthropologie in the UK, according to his biography on Google Books.

It’s because I actually forget that I’m trans most of the time… Honestly, it doesn’t cross my mind that much anymore (I’m too busy living life), I don’t bang on about it, I don’t wave a flag – but I am forever grateful to those who do, for they continue to fight for and ensure that I (and you) have rights.

“I have a wonderful family, amazing friends and a great life. I am a ‘normal’ (whatever that means) everyday person, doing everyday things BUT I have made sure that since coming out I am always ‘visible’ – so that future generations don’t feel like they need to be hidden away for years, dealing with a whole load of heavy… like I did.”
