Unger wrestled for World Championship Wrestling from 1999-2001 and then with Total Nonstop Action Wrestling from 2008-11. For several years beginning in 2012, she worked in various on-camera roles (though not actively wrestling) for Shine Wresting.

Former WCW Wrestler Daffney Unger died on September 1, 2021, at the age of 46. Unger was found dead at her home in Norcross, a small city northeast of Atlanta. Her death was confirmed by her mother, Jean Tookey Spruill, on Facebook. Unger’s mother wrote in a Facebook post, using her daughter’s real name: “It is with great sadness I have to let you know that my daughter Shannon Spruill…Scream Queen Daff, passed away suddenly last night. Absolutely heartbroken.”
SHIMMER women’s professional wrestling wrote on Twitter: “We are very sad to have to announce the passing of Shannon Spruill aka Daffney Unger. We are posting this at the request of her family. Please respect their privacy at this trying time.”
Pro wrestler Lexie Fyfe told the Daily News: “She was found very early this morning. This last act, I don’t want it to define her. She would always want people to reach out for help and to check in on those they’re worried about. We’re going to miss her. I loved watching her perform. She was a born performer who was made for wrestling. When she had to retire due to injuries, she missed it immensely. She’ll be missed as a performer, too, not just as a friend, but mostly as a friend.”
Daffney Unger Cause of Death
Daffney Unger’s cause of death was suicide. Unger had hosted a disturbing Instagram Live on September 1, 2021 night in which she appeared to be discussing suicide as she held a small gun. In her final video, she spoke of suffering from chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) — the degenerative brain disorder caused by repeated concussions.
The Instagram Live video has been taken down. In it, the distraught Unger addressed viewers, at one point saying: “Do you guys not understand that I am all alone? Do you not understand that?” Later, she makes an apparent reference to her wishes that her brain be donated for medical study, noting: “I don’t want to do anything to hurt my brain. I want to be studied. I want the future generations to know. Don’t do stupid shit like me.”
After the video was posted, former wrestler Mick Foley posted on Twitter he tried to reach Spruill but “My phone call went straight to voicemail.” Foley wrote: “If anyone has a way of reaching Daffney Unger, or knows her address, please help out. She’s in a bad personal place and is threatening to harm herself. My phone call went straight to voicemail.”
Following news of Unger’s death, Foley tweeted: “I’m so very sorry to learn of Daffney’s passing. A terrible loss for her family, friends and wrestling. She was far ahead if her time in our business. #RIPDaffney. If you’re hurting and thinking of doing harm to yourself, please know that help is available. 800-273-8255.”
