Maria Mercader born Maria Carla Mercader was a CBS News veteran journalist, who covered breaking news for nearly three decades. She got her start at CBS News in 1987, in the CBS Page Program. During her time working on the CBS News foreign and national desks, she helped produce several high-profile stories, including the death of Princess Diana and the 9/11 attacks.

In 2004, Mercader won an Emmy for business and financial reporting for her work producing a “CBS Sunday Morning” report on computer spam.

Her most recent role was director of talent strategy, helping shape strategy for the network’s correspondents and reporters. Mercader was also active in coordinating CBS News’ participation in the Asian American Journalists Association, the National Lesbian and Gay Journalists Association and the National Association of Black Journalists.
