Bruno Ganz was a Swiss actor. He was born on 22 March 1941 in Zürich, Switzerland to a Swiss mechanic father and an Italian mother.

In the early days of his career he worked as a bookseller and a paramedic before he broke into film with roles in The Marquise of O, which won a special prize at Cannes in 1976, and Peter Stein’s drama Sommergäste (Summer Guests).

He played Adolf Hitler in the film Downfall. The historical drama was nominated for the Academy Award for the Best Foreign Language Film and it won the BBC Four World Cinema Award. Ganz picked up the Goldener Gong, the Jupiter Prize and the Best Actor gong at the Bavarian Film Awards for his performance.

He also played a vampire in Werner Herzog’s Nosferatu the Vampyre (1979) and an angel in Wim Wenders’ Wings of Desire (1987) and its sequel Faraway, So Close! (1993).

The greatest honor Mr. Ganz received was possession of the Iffland-Ring, a diamond-studded piece of jewelry named for an 18th-century German actor and given to the “most significant and most worthy actor of the German-speaking theater.” When he received it in 1996, as a bequest from his predecessor, Josef Meinrad, he was only the fifth actor to have held it since the 1870s.
