Arshad Sharif was a Pakistani journalist and TV anchor. He was the host of the Programme PowerPlay on ARY News. In August 2022, The ARY Network announced it had “parted ways” with Sharif stating that it expects its employees’ conduct on social media to be in line with the company policy.

The announcement was made in a statement posted by the channel on its social media accounts. “ARY Network’s code of conduct for its employees clearly states that any post by an employee on social media has to be in accordance with the company’s policy,” the statement said.

“Thus, with a heavy heart we would like to announce that after a journey of 8 years together, ARY has parted way with Arshad Sharif. We wish him all the very best for his future endeavours.”

Earlier that month, the police had booked Sharif, ARY Digital Network President and CEO Salman Iqbal, Head of News and Current Affairs Ammad Yousaf, anchorperson Khawar Ghumman and a producer for sedition over a controversial interview by PTI leader Dr Shahbaz Gill broadcast on the channel on Aug 8.

The 49-year-old award-winning journalist was recently featured in the trailer for a documentary titled “Behind Closed Doors”. Behind Closed Doors is a film about corruption in high places and those who enable it. The documentary features contributions by John-Allan Namu of Africa Uncensored, Emin Huseynov, Arshad Sharif, Rachel Davies Teka of Transparency International, Tom Stocks of the OCCRP, Imran Khan the former Pakistani Prime Minister, Fawad Chaudhry, Shahzad Akbar and journalist Irfan Hashmi.

In March 2019, Sharif was awarded the Pride of Performance by President Arif Alvi for his contributions to journalism.

Sharif’s brother, Dr. Ashraf Sharif, passed away in an accident on his way to attend the funeral of their father in Bannu, the area of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. They were laid to rest with full military honours at the H-11 Graveyard.

Journalist Arshad Sharif was shot and killed in Nairobi, Kenya, his wife confirmed the tragic news on Twitter.

“I lost friend, husband and my favourite journalist @arsched today, as per police he was shot in Kenya,” Arshad Sharif’s wife Javeria Siddique wrote. “Respect our privacy and in the name of breaking pls don’t share our family pics, personal details and his last pictures from hospital. Remember us in ur prayers.”

The former reporter and TV anchor of ARY TV had moved to the East African nation after finding it hostile in Pakistan after the ouster of Imran Khan from the government. Prior to arriving in Kenya, Sharif had been spotted in London a few days back after arriving from Dubai.

Following the news of Sharif’s death, condolences started pouring in from across the country.

President Dr Arif Alvi termed Sharif’s death a loss for journalism and Pakistan. He said: “Arshad Sharif’s death Is a great loss to journalism and Pakistan. May his soul rest in peace and may his family, which includes his followers, have the strength to bear this loss.”

Journalist Rauf Klasra wrote on Twitter: “Friends since 1998 when I joined Dawn Islamabad. Father of 5 school-going kids, he was the only male guardian of the family left after his Naval Commander father and Major Dr brother died on the same day in 2011. Words alone can’t explain the grief and pain we all are suffering. A massive blow.”

ARY News anchorperson Kashif Abbasi tweeted: “My brother, my friend my colleague Arshad Sharif was shot dead in Kenya. I still can’t believe it. It’s beyond heartbreaking. this is just wrong.. this is painful.. I love u brother.”

President of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf Sindh chapter Ali Haider Zaidi tweeted: “It is with great difficulty that I’m typing this tweet. Arshad Sharif, a friend & a brother was martyred in Kenya! Some sources say it was a sniper hit on the head but the media saying it’s a car accident! Not being able to digest this devastating news.”

Salman Iqbal, Founder and CEO of ARY DIGITAL Network, said: “I still can’t believe it. I am speechless. May Allah SWT grant him the highest place in Jannah. Aameen.”

Hum News anchorperson Meher Bokhari tweeted: “Arshad Sharif, not just a colleague, a brother, is no more. From Islamabad to Moscow, from Dunya News to ARY, I’ve not known a finer gentleman. Shot dead. Too young. Too brutally. Still can not wrap my head around it.”
