Anthoine Hubert was a French professional racing driver. He began his karting career in 2006 at age nine. In 2010 he finished as runner-up in the CIK-FIA Karting Academy Trophy . In the 2011 and 2012 CIK-FIA “U18” World Karting Championships, he finished third.

Hubert won the GP3 championship in 2018 and joined Renault’s development programme before joining the academy as a full member this year. He was sat in eighth in the championship having won races in Monaco and France this year, his debut season in F2.

On 31 August 2019, Hubert was involved in a serious crash on the second lap of the feature race of the 2019 Spa-Francorchamps FIA Formula 2 round. Hubert hit the wall at the top of the Radillion curve while trying to avoid Trident’s Giuliano Alesi, who spun in front of him. Hubert’s car was deflected back into the path of Charouz driver Juan Manuel Correa, who struck Hubert’s car at high speed. Both cars were torn apart by the force of the accident. Hubert and Correa were transported to the circuit’s medical center following the accident where Hubert died from his injuries.

The FIA confirmed that Hubert had passed away in a statement. The FIA said in the statement: “As a result of the incident, the FIA regrets to inform that the driver of car #19, Anthoine Hubert (FRA), succumbed to his injuries, and passed away at 18:35.

“The driver of car #12, Juan Manuel Correa (USA), is in a stable condition and is being treated at the CHU Liège hospital. The driver of car #20 Giuliano Alesi (FRA) was checked and declared fit at the medical centre.

“The FIA is providing support to the event organisers and the relevant authorities, and has commenced an investigation into the incident.”

Renault Sport Racing, with which Hubert was a junior driver, said in a statement: “Renault Sport Racing is devastated at the loss of one of its brightest young talents, Anthoine Hubert, who passed away today following an accident involving several cars at Circuit Spa-Francorchamps, Belgium. The 22-year-old Frenchman was racing for BWT-Arden in the FIA Formula 2 Championship.

“Anthoine was a member of the Renault Sport Academy and raced in the FIA Formula 2 Championship, the final ladder to F1. As reigning GP3 champion and member of the Equipe de France, FFSA (French Federation of Motorsport), the Frenchman was a huge talent who also brought great energy and positivity to his championship, his teams and the Renault Sport Academy. His smile and sunny personality lit up our formidable group of young drivers, who had formed tight and enduring bonds.

“His strong results in F2 this season, including wins on home soil in Monaco and France, inspired not just the other recruits but also the wider Renault Sport Racing group.”

Formula 2 said in a statement: “Formula 1, Formula 2, and Formula 3 are deeply saddened by the passing of Anthoine Hubert following a horrific crash at today’s Feature Race at Spa-Francorchamps, involving three other drivers.

“We would like to extend our deepest condolences to Anthoine’s family, loved ones, and friends. We would also like to send our heartfelt sympathies to the entire Arden team.

“Anthoine has been part of our paddock since 2017. He was a fantastic driver who had a bright future ahead of him. He became GP3 Series Champion last year, and this season, he won twice in Formula 2, taking victories in Monaco, and at his home race in Le Castellet.

“He was kind to everyone, always smiling, and his positive attitude was infectious. He will be dearly missed. Out of respect, tomorrow’s race has been cancelled.”

The Mercedes team said in a statement: “The entire Mercedes family sends its deepest condolences to the family and friends of Anthoine Hubert, and his Arden and Renault teams on this tragic day.”

Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton wrote on Instagram: “This is devastating. God rest your soul Anthoine. My prayers and thoughts are with you and your family today.

“If a single one of you watching and enjoying this sport think for a second what we do is safe your hugely mistaken. All these drivers put their life on the line when they hit the track and people need to appreciate that in a serious way because it is not appreciated enough.

“Not from the fans nor some of the people actually working in the sport. Anthoine is a hero as far as I’m concerned, for taking the risk he did to chase his dreams. I’m so sad that this has happened. Let’s left him up and remember him. Rest in peace brother.”
