Amin Jaffer Biography – Amin Jaffer Wiki
Dr. Amin Jaffer is the Chief Curator of The Al Thani Collection, an encyclopaedic holding of some 6,000 works of art. He is also a consultant for Christie’s. From June 2007 to February 2017, he was the International Director of Asian Art at Christie’s, with a particular responsibility for developing Christie’s brand and business in India and among Indians globally. He specializes in Indian art in the age of European influence.
In February 2017, Christie’s announced that Dr Amin Jaffer “will be leaving the company” after a 10 year career. William Robinson, International Head of World Art Group, said in a statement: “We wish Amin very well in his future plans working with one of the most esteemed private collections and look forward to continuing our relationship with him in his capacity as a consultant for Christie’s. We would like to thank him for his 10 year contribution to the firm and particularly for all the work he has done to raise our profile in India and to promote Indian art across the globe.”
Prior to his role at Christie’s, he was a curator at the Victoria and Albert Museum for 13 years. He has authored a number of books including, Furniture from British India and Ceylon (V&A, 2001), Luxury Goods from India (V&A, 2002) and Made for Maharajas: A Design Diary of Princely India (2006).
He was Co-Curator of the V&A’s 2004 exhibition, Encounters: The Meeting of Asia and Europe, 1500-1800, which explored the artistic and cultural encounter between Europe and Asia following the discovery of a sea route to India by Vasco da Gama in 1498. He was also the co-curator of the 2009 exhibition Maharaja: the Splendour of India’s Royal Courts, and co-editor of the accompanying catalogues.
His most recent publication is Beyond Extravagance: A Royal Collection of Gems and Jewels (2013), a multi-authored volume documenting a private collection of Indian jewellery spanning four hundred years. He lectures frequently in Europe, America and India and contributes regularly to journals and major newspapers.
