Colleen Makhubele is a South African politician and leader of the South African Rainbow Alliance (SARA), a political party founded in 2023. She is the former Speaker of Council in the City of Johannesburg (CoJ) Metropolitan Council. Previously, she held the Chairperson of Chairpersons (Chair of Chairs) at the CoJ Council.

She is a member of The Institute of Directors South Africa. Makhubele was a Chairperson of the Board of Metropolitan Trading Company at the City of Johannesburg under the Department of Economic Development, and also served as both Chairperson of the Board and Non-Executive Director of the South African Post Office (SAPO). She currently serves as a Trustee of HCL Foundation Trust.

Political Party

Colleen Makhubele founded the South African Rainbow Alliance (SARA) in 2023. SARA was initially conceived as an alliance of smaller parties, including the National Freedom Party, the African Amalgamated Restorative Movement, and the Independent Citizens Movement. She was previously a member of the Congress of the People (COPE).

In August 2024, Makhubele joined the uMkhonto weSizwe Party (MKP) after resigning from SARA. The party has also welcomed high-profile political figures from the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) and African National Congress (ANC), including former EFF deputy president Floyd Shivambu.

“We always had cousins,” Makhubele told The Citizen. “I think at any given time, we were about 10-15 children in the house my father was taking to school because he was the only educated person in the family. We were not poor, but weren’t rich either.”
