Luana Alonso is a Paraguayan swimmer, who began swimming competitively at the age of 11. She represented Paraguay in the 100m butterfly at the 2024 Paris Olympics. She competed in the 100m butterfly at the 2020 Tokyo Games held in 2021.

Luana competed for one season at Southern Methodist University as a sophomore. She competed in the 2023 NCAA Division I Swimming and Diving Championships as a member of the SMU Mustangs. She finished the year at SMU with career-best times in the 100m and 200m events in butterfly, per the university’s website. Luana wasn’t listed on the SMU roster for the 2023-24 season. Prior to SMU, Luana attended Virginia Tech University in 2021-2022.

Retirement

In June 2024, Alonso announced she qualified for the Paris 2024 Olympics in what will be her second appearance at the Olympic level. She wrote: “It’s official! Qualified for the Paris Games 2024 ! My heart is happy to represent the country once again! Thank you to my family, friends and sponsors for making this possible! Let’s go Paraguay.”

After finishing in sixth during her heat in the 100m butterfly at the 2024 Paris Games, Luana announced her retirement from swimming on July 27, 2024.

“It’s official now,” she wrote on Instagram. “I’m retiring from swimming, thank you all so much for the support! Sorry Paraguay. All that remains is to thank you!”

On July 28, 2024, Luana elaborated on her decision, looking back at her many years in the sport. “Swimming: thank you for allowing me to dream,” she wrote under images of herself at the Olympic starting block. “You taught me to fight, to try, perseverance, sacrifice, discipline and many more things.”

She continued, “I gave you part of my life and this I wouldn’t change for anything in the world because I lived the best experiences of my life, you gave my thousands of joys, friends from other countries I will always carry in my heart, unique opportunities. This is not a goodbye, it’s a see you soon.”

Olympic Village Controversy

Paraguayan swimmer Luana Alonso was reportedly kicked out of the Olympic Village during the 2024 Paris Olympics because she was a distraction to the other athletes following “inappropriate” conduct including a trip to Disneyland and skimpy outfits.

Larissa Schaerer, the head of the Paraguayan Olympic Committee, said in a statement to The Sun: “Her presence is creating an inappropriate atmosphere within Team Paraguay. We thank her for proceeding as instructed, as it was of her own free will that she did not spend the night in the Athletes’ Village.”

Luana denied the allegations via her Instagram Story on August 5, 2024. She wrote: “I just wanted to clarify that I was never removed or expelled from anywhere, stop spreading false information. I don’t want to give any statement, but neither am I going to let lies affect me.”
