Abdulrahman Al Jassim is a Qatari football referee. He has been an international referee for FIFA since 2013. Al-Jassim has served as a referee at several major tournaments, including the 2017 FIFA U-20 World Cup in South Korea and the 2019 FIFA Club World Cup in Qatar.
A beneficiary of the Asian Football Confederation’s (AFC) Project Future programme in 2009 – the predecessor of the ground-breaking AFC Referees Academy – Al Jassim made his FIFA World Cup debut as the only Asian referee to implement the video assistant referee (VAR) in Russia. He was a Video Assistant Referee (VAR) for the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia.
According to FIFA, Al Jassim along with his colleagues were selected “based on their experience as video match officials in their respective association and confederation competitions, in addition to their successful participation in several preparatory seminars and FIFA competitions, where they enhanced their VAR knowledge and skills by using the system.”
He also officiated the 2019 AFC Asian Cup in the United Arab Emirates, the 2020 AFC Champions League Final and the 2019 CONCACAF Gold Cup.
In 2022, Al Jassim was named by FIFA as one of the 36 referees that will be officiating at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. He will represent the host nation at the tournament. The 36 referees will take charge of the group stages and those who impress will be retained for the knockout stages of the tournament.
His selection for the FIFA World Cup 2022 is a dream come true. In a 2018 interview with the-AFC.com, the Qatari revealed: “Right now, I am in the FIFA World Cup in Russia, but as a VAR. My ultimate goal is to continue to work hard for the next four years and eventually I hope to be selected for the FIFA World Cup 2022 when the tournament will be hosted in my country. To manage the final match in Qatar 2022 would be fulfilling a lifelong dream.”
