Viktoria Marinova was a Bulgarian investigative television journalist who was raped and brutally murdered in the northern town of Ruse on the Danube river.
Marinova was an administrative director of a private TVN television in Ruse and had launched a new current events talk show called “Detector”.
Her body was found in a park on 6 October 2018 with her mobile phone, car keys, glasses and part of her clothes missing.
Viktoria Marinova Cause of Death
According to Ruse regional prosecutor Georgy Georgiev, her cause of death was blows on the head and suffocation. It was later confirmed to journalists by Bulgarian Interior Minister Mladen Marinov that she had also been raped.
In her last talk show “Detector” on September 30, she interviewed two investigative journalists Dimitar Stoyanov from the Bivol.bg website and Attila Biro from the Romanian Rise Project, who were investigating alleged corruption involving European Union funds.
Marinova is the third journalist to be murdered in the European Union in less than an year after Daphne Caruana Galizia of Malta; and Jan Kuciak of Slovakia and his girlfriend. Daphne Caruana Galizia, who had worked on the Panama Papers revelations, was killed in October 2017 after a bomb exploded in a rented car she was using. Investigative journalist Jรกn Kuciak and his girlfriend were shot to death in February 2018 in Slovakia.
