Jake Ehlinger (born Jacob Ehlinger McAdams) was a linebacker for the University of Texas Longhorns football team and the younger brother of former Longhorns quarterback Sam Ehlinger. He was a second-year linebacker who joined the program in 2019, according to the University of Texas at Austin Athletics’ website. He did not play the last two seasons. He was also a two-time member of the Big 12 Commissioner’s Honor Roll.

He played for Westlake High School and helped the team head to back-to-back 6A State semifinal appearances. He led the powerhouse prep program with 97 tackles as a high school senior. He received interest from college programs such as Brown, Incarnate Word and Penn before opting to join the Longhorns as a walk-on.

Sam Ehlinger’s brother, Jake Ehlinger, was found dead on Thursday, May 6, 2021, about a mile west from the UT-Austin campus, Austin Police confirmed. The Austin Police Department said it received a call Thursday at 12:18 p.m. reporting a death on the 1200 block of West 22nd Street. It said the circumstances of the death were not suspicious and identified the person as Jacob McAdams Ehlinger.

Following the news of his death, the University of Texas football team tweeted: “Our hearts are broken. We love you Jake. You’ll be dearly missed, but never forgotten.” John Bianco, University of Texas Sr. Associate AD/Media Relations, wrote on Twitter: “Words cannot describe the immense sadness we are all feeling right now. This is just devastating, heartbreaking news. Jake was such a tremendous person and so beloved. Sam, Jena, Morgen and the entire Ehlinger family are in my thoughts and prayers.”

Colts owner Jim Irsay tweeted: “We grieve and weep with the Ehlinger family. Prayers, love and support.”
