Tristen Epps is a Caribbean-American chef and contestant on Season 22 of Top Chef. Born in Trinidad, Tristen focuses on neo Afro-Caribbean cuisine in a fine-dining format. He was crowned Chopped champion on Food Network and came in second on ABC’s The Taste.
Raised in a single parent military family of Trinidadian heritage, Tristen discovered his love for cooking at an early age. He graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Culinary Arts and Food & Beverage Industry Management at Johnson & Wales University in Charlotte, NC.
After graduating, he honed his craft in Michelin-star restaurants, eventually earning his own Michelin recognition as the executive chef at Marcus Samuelsson’s Red Rooster in Miami and receiving Star Chef’s Rising Star Chef award.
Tristen also served as executive chef of Cooks & Captains in Brooklyn, NY and Ocean Social by Tristen Epps for the Eden Roc Hotel in Miami where he earned a James Beard Nomination for Best Chef of the South.
Dedicated to bringing recognition to Black foodways and elevating them within fine culture, Tristen aspires to be a trailblazer and role model for the next generation of chefs. His diverse travels—from Guam, to Stockholm, to West Virginia to New York—have shaped his worldview and profoundly influenced his culinary approach.
After relocating back to Houston with the goal of opening his own restaurant, Tristen founded Epps & Flows Culinary, a platform for collaborative dinners showcasing his neo Afro-Caribbean cuisine. He is currently laying the groundwork for two exciting concepts Buboy, a woodfired Afro-Caribbean tasting menu, as well as a casual hot dog bar that reimagines the beloved staple with bold flavors and unique toppings.

Chef Tristen Epps, aged 37, is a contestant on Season 22 of Bravo’s competition cooking show “Top Chef.” The competition will be judged by host Kristen Kish, Tom Colicchio and Gail Simmons. From Toronto to Calgary, Montreal, and Prince Edward Island, Season 22 will highlight much of the rich cooking scene in Canada, and it will feature many familiar faces.
In the Canada season of “Top Chef,” the winner will take home the grand prize of $250,000 — the largest award in the show’s history — along with Delta SkyMiles Diamond Medallion Status and $125,000 to spend on travel with Delta Air Lines. The winner also gets a feature in Food & Wine and an appearance at the annual Food & Wine Classic in Aspen.
Lastly, they’ll headline a dinner at the James Beard House in New York City and present at the James Beard Foundation Awards in Chicago, Illinois. The 15 contestants from across the U.S will also get a chance to win cash prizes totaling $150,000 during each Quickfire Challenge, and at several Elimination Challenges.
Tristen is one of two Houstonians competing on Season 22 of Top Chef, alongside Henry Lu of Jun. Houston has had other “Top Chef” contestants in the past, including Michelle Wallace and Vanarin Kuch.
