Toby Buckland Biography – Toby Buckland Wiki

Toby Buckland is a gardener, TV presenter and author, best known as a presenter on BBC’s long running flagship gardening program Gardeners’ World and the weekly garden BBC Radio Devon show. He started out as an apprentice at a local rose nursery, via a botanic garden to researcher, and went on to present numerous gardening TV shows, including BBC Gardeners’ World, RHS Chelsea Flowershow and Hampton Court Flower Festival coverage.

In 2008, the BBC Radio Devon presenter won RHS Gold and Best in show for his Ethical Garden at Gardeners’ World Live. In 2009 he won the Environmental Award from the Garden Media Guild for a Gardeners’ World Special on peat in gardening.

In an interview with Devon Home Magazine, Toby revealed the reason why he chose a career in gardening, saying, “It’s in the family. My grandfather was a gardener, my dad and uncles all builders, so being practical and creative with my hands is in the blood. My uncle took me to collect seaweed to put around his spuds when I was a lad and I haven’t looked back since. I can still remember my amazement that what had been piles of slimy seaweed was now bucketfuls of potatoes. Gardening is full of these little miracles. You put in a little effort and reap huge rewards.”

On how he got started, the gardening expert said: “I started by earning pocket money for weeding for my mother’s friends. Even before I was 10 I was repairing dry-stone walls. When I left school I took an apprenticeship at a local Devon nursery before going on to study at Bicton College and then the University of Cambridge Botanic Garden.”

When not working as a garden consultant to a local estate, Toby also writes a witty and practical weekly column for Amateur Gardening and Devon Life and regularly contributes to Telegraph Gardening. He also gives fun and informative garden talks around the UK and abroad.
