Thea Trachtenberg was a long-time producer at Good Morning America who passed on Sunday, April 12, 2020, Easter morning. She worked on Good Morning America (GMA) for 20 years, and she was the main producer of anchor George Stephanopoulos. The producer who had fought cancer twice was “battling serious heart and lung disease for some time,” according to a staff note from senior executive producer Michael Corn, Page Six reports. It is not believed that Thea tested positive for COVID-19.

During the broadcast, Stephanopoulos said that she produced major interviews with top government officials, including presidents and prime ministers, as well as stars of Broadway, The Muppets, and Mark Hamill. Her most loved interview was with U2’s Bono, as she was a big fan. According to Stephanopoulos, she frequently asked him almost every week when they would have Bono back on the show.

According to her LinkedIn, she describes herself as an anchor producer for ABC News Chief Anchor George Stephanopoulos. Her
responsibilities were field producing, writing, and editing all tape pieces for George Stephanopoulos across the entirety of ABC News, in addition to working on long term bookings. Her pieces also include; an Oval Office interview with President Obama, interview with British Prime Minister Theresa May in 10 Downing Street, dozens of political interviews over the 2016 election season, news making & Emmy nominated interview with Donald Trump in July 2016 where he discussed Russia and attacked a Gold-Star. She also carried out the first and only interview with former Ferguson, MO police officer Darren Wilson, as well as interviews with multiple celebrities such as Angelina Jolie, Bono, NBC star Dwyane Wade and Jerry Seinfeld.

In September 2004 to December 2012, she was a feature Producer for GMA for 8 years 4 months producing pieces for anchor Charlie Gibson (writing, researching, field producing and editing), in addition to continuing to produce medical feature pieces, features for other anchors such as Robin Roberts and Diane Sawyer, as well as general assignment stories.

Thea Trachtenberg, a producer for Good Morning America, died early Sunday morning, ABC News reports.

During a Good Morning America broadcast on Monday, George Stephanopoulos said she “was a force on this show. A mentor to so many on our staff and a colleague and friend with a biting wit, skeptical eye and a very big heart.”

Good Morning America’s tribute to her on twitter said;

During the Monday morning GMA broadcast, anchor Robin Roberts said, “She was a mentor to so many on our staff.”

An emotional Roberts continued, “Her fellow colleagues really, really loved her. That’s what we should remember about Thea. Boy, she a big heart.” She also reminded her co-anchors that Trachtenberg was a great poet.
