Slater Nalley is a country singer-songwriter from Atlanta, Georgia, and a contestant on American Idol 2025. He has been performing around Leelanau County since he was 14 years old. His first gig was at Dune Bird Winery, thanks to his aunt and uncle, Nicole and Bo White, former owners of the Dune Bird Winery north of Leland.
Nalley is currently a senior at The Lovett School in Atlanta, Georgia. He is a “Lovett Lifer,” a student who enrolled at The Lovett School in Kindergarten through graduation. He is involved with extracurricular activities, including chorus and the school musical.
Nalley grew up listening to the likes of Jason Isbell, Pearl Jam, Led Zeppelin, John Prine, George Strait, Ronnie Milsap, Marcus King, the Avett Brothers, Sturgill Simpson, and Tyler Childers. Since 14, Nalley has performed all over the area, including at V.I. Grill, Harbor House, and more recently, the River Club in Glen Arbor.

Slater Nalley is a contestant on the 23rd season of American Idol on ABC. He auditioned for American Idol with an original song titled “Traces of You.” The song is an emotional tribute to Lovett English teacher Michele Davis’ late son, Carter Davis, who tragically passed away in 2016.
During Nalley’s American Idol audition, the judges were moved to tears, with Carrie Underwood declaring, “I couldn’t have imagined you doing that any better.” They unanimously advanced Slater to the next round, exclaiming together, “You’re going to Hollywood!”
“To hear Slater sing ‘Traces of You’ in front of celebrity judges and then watch the audition was truly surreal — just magical,” Mrs. Davis said in a statement. “Losing a child shatters you, and yet life goes on. To see Carter’s spirit get to live on a little in this song is a priceless gift that seems to put some of those shattered pieces back together. My family is forever grateful.”
