Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick is an American entrepreneur and politician. She is the U.S. representative for Florida’s 20th congressional district. She was elected to congress in January 2022 and was re-elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 2024 to serve a third term.

Congresswoman Cherfilus-McCormick serves on the House Committee on Veteran Affairs and the House Committee on Foreign’ Affairs as the Ranking Member of the Subcommittee on the Middle East and North Africa. She is also the Chair of the Global Women’s Issues Task Force for the Democratic Women’s Caucus, a Co-Chair of the Haiti Caucus, and serves as a member of the Congressional Black Caucus.

Congresswoman Cherfilus-McCormick earned her Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and Government from Howard University. In further pursuit of education, the Congresswoman also earned a Juris Doctorate from St. Thomas University School of Law. In addition, she completed extensive coursework toward an MBA from the University of Maryland University College. She is a graduate of Chaminade-Madonna College Preparatory.

Before Politics

Cherfilus-McCormick previously served as the Chief Executive Officer of Trinity Health Care Services, Inc., a healthcare company. During the COVID-19 pandemic, her company vaccinated over 300,000 and employed over 1,000 in partnership with Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and Florida Department of Emergency Management (FDEM).

Before joining Trinity Health Care Services, she worked as a project manager for New York City Transit Authority in the Capital Programs & Environmental Sustainability division, managing over 2-million-dollar projects.

Cherfilus-McCormick has served as the Chair of several Board of Directors and Advisory Boards. She has been appointed to the Human Relations Committee, Advisory Board for Broward County Public Schools and Chair of the Advisory Board for the McCormick Law Firm Essential Community Health and Haitian Chamber of Commerce.

Most recently, Cherfilus-McCormick was recognized as Rising Star Awardee (2018); Miramar’s Progressive Woman of the Year (2019); and Community Voice of the Year (2020).

U.S. Rep. Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick has been indicted on charges of stealing $5 million in FEMA funds and making illegal campaign contributions, according to the Department of Justice (DOJ).

According to the indictment, Cherfilus-McCormick and her brother Edwin Cherfilus worked through their family health-care company on a FEMA-funded COVID-19 vaccination staffing contract in 2021. In July 2021, the company received an overpayment of $5 million in FEMA funds.

The indictment alleges that the defendants conspired to steal that $5 million and routed it through multiple accounts to disguise its source. Prosecutors allege that a substantial portion of the misappropriated funds was used as candidate contributions to Cherfilus-McCormick’s 2021 congressional campaign and for the personal benefit of the defendants.

The indictment further alleges that Cherfilus-McCormick and Nadege Leblanc, 46, of Miramar, arranged additional contributions using straw donors, funneling other monies from the FEMA-funded Covid-19 contract to friends and relatives who then donated to the campaign as if using their own money.

The indictment also charges Cherfilus-McCormick and her 2021 tax preparer David K. Spencer, 41, of Davie, with conspiring to file a false federal tax return. According to the indictment, they falsely claimed political spending and other personal expenses as business deductions and inflated charitable contributions in order to reduce her tax obligations.
