Shane Martin is the father of Dustin Martin, a professional Australian rules footballer playing for the Richmond Football Club in the Australian Football League (AFL). In April 2021, Richmond Football Club granted Dustin Martin permission to travel overseas to visit his New Zealand-based father, who was deported from Australia in 2016. The pair shared a close bond but had not seen each other for 12 months prior to that visit due of travel restrictions as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.

The AFL confirmed that the Tigers had asked for advice in determining whether Martin should be allowed to make the trip. The Tigers were told Martin’s trip “is their responsibility, so if there are any issues, it is up to the player and club to work through them.”

“It’s a no-brainer for us [to let Dusty visit his father in New Zealand],” Richmond coach Damien Hardwick told The Age at the time. “He hasn’t seen him for a long period of time. Like everyone else he is travelling back to see his dad, he just happens to be overseas. And I know it’s a little bit challenging with Covid times but we will always support our player who wants to see his family.”

Dustin Martin’s father Shane Martin missed all three of the Tigers’ premierships that featured his son as he was deported to New Zealand in 2016 and has had his attempts to re-enter Australia rejected.
