Serhat Ahmet Biography – Serhat Ahmet Wiki
Serhat Ahmet is a second generation antiques dealer, specialising in European porcelain, particularly the period 1720 to 1935. Having worked in the family antiques business for 25 years, he set up on his own in 2013. He owns an antique shop in central London and is a regular exhibitor at BADA and LAPADA.
He has been in the antique industry since he was just 15 years old. In an interview with Homes & Antiques, Antiques Roadshow expert Serhat Ahmet discovered his fascination with European porcelain when he was still at school.
“My family started collecting in the late 80s and early 90s. They loved Meissen, Vienna and Berlin, and my brothers and I spent weekends with them, going from fair to fair, to buy things.”
His brothers soon lost interest, but Serhat was irreversibly captivated.
“I loved the thrill of looking at beautiful objects, the beauty of all the different shapes and colours, the detail a piece did or didn’t have.”
A few years later, Serhat Ahmet’s parents decided to start their own business, selling at fairs and then progressing to a stand at Portobello Market. Serhat helped, working every Saturday and spending his spare time poring over price guides, books and auction catalogues his parents brought back.
His enthusiasm for porcelain survived his degree course in economics, but on graduating he decided to work for an energy company. In 2012, Serhat’s porcelain passion won out and he launched his new business: a single cabinet in a corridor in an arcade on London’s Portobello Road.
“Then I moved into a small unit, then a bigger one. From there I took a unit in Grays Antique Centre. For six months I did Grays Monday to Friday, and Portobello on Saturday. Then I found a big stand at Grays and gave up Portobello.”
It was while he was at Grays that Serhat became a member of BADA and LAPADA and took stands at Olympia as well as the LAPADA and BADA fairs. He joined the Antiques Roadshow team in 2018, and in 2020 he was also recruited by Antiques Road Trip as a roving expert.
In 2020, Serhat opened his shop at Cecil Court in Covent Garden. His stock covers more than two centuries of porcelain manufacture, a range that sets him apart from most ceramic dealers.
“I concentrate on European porcelain from 1720 to 1935, focusing on the four main factories, Meissen, KPM Berlin, Vienna and Sèvres. I also have English pieces, objects of vertu, bronzes and glass.”
He sees himself as a guide and curator for his customers.
“I am continually trying to create the best collection for them that includes rare pieces by big names, as well as factories no one’s heard of. I don’t want to create a museum in my stock, but what I carry is informed by research and knowledge. I know what each piece is.”
His personal favourites are pieces from the Art Nouveau and Art Deco periods, but he also loves the naiveté of early pieces and the colourful elaboration of the 19th century.
“I feel there’s a story to be told across the whole period, and I look at my stock as my collection: something that I’ve invested in both ! nancially and emotionally. I have to really like something to buy it, and I especially enjoy selling it to someone who appreciates it; then going out and ! nding something else to buy.”
