Gwen Casten was the daughter of Illinois Rep. Sean Casten, who was elected in 2018. The 17-year-old graduated from Downers Grove North High School in May and was headed to the University of Vermont in the fall to study environmental science.

Gwen recently appeared in a campaign video supporting her father’s bid for reelection and detailing how turning 18 would signify a “big year.”

“Lots of milestones,” she said in the ad. “Like voting for the first time. But not just for anyone … Sean Casten. My Congressman. But I just call him dad.”

Congressman Sean Casten’s beloved daughter, Gwen Casten, passed away on June 13, 2022 at the age of 17 at the family’s Downers Grove home, Downers Grove police and the congressman’s office confirmed in a statement.

“This morning, Congressman Casten’s beloved daughter, Gwen (17), passed away,” the congressman’s office said in a statement. “The Casten family requests privacy, and we will be issuing no further comment during this heartbreaking time.”

Gwen’s high school’s Empowerment Club, Downers Grove North Empowerment Club, which she founded, took to Instagram to commemorate her life, writing: “We are heartbroken over the loss of Gwen Casten. She played a key role in bringing about positive change to the DG community. Gwen was a leader and a friend. During her time at North, she was in charge of @dgnempowermentclub , which became one of the most successful clubs at North. She was a highly accomplished student at North, being involved in various activities, from Changemakers, band, NHS, math team, and tennis, all while being on the high honor roll.

“Gwen and her father @repseancasten recognized the importance of protecting the environment and the dangers that arose if we kept polluting our planet. To no surprise, she was committed to study environmental science at University of Vermont. No matter what, she was was always there to help anyone in need and give a listening ear.

“Gwen was truly an ally to DGN AAPISU and the other student unions. She did whatever she could to support and amplify POC voices. Carrying on her legacy means standing up for what you believe in, and doing above and beyond to make the world a better place. Rest in peace Gwen❤️🕊”

Sean Casten’s office did not add any information about her cause of death. The medical examiner is yet to determine the cause and manner of death. According to the medical examiner, “the cause of death is the medical disease, injury, or poison (alcohol, drug or toxic substance) that caused the physical death of a person. The manner of death is a description of the circumstances surrounding the death. Examples of manner of death are: natural, accident, suicide, homicide, undetermined, and pending.”

Did Gwen Casten die by suicide? Downers Grove police were called to a home in the area where Casten lives just before 7 a.m. Monday “for an unresponsive seventeen year old female,” according to The Chicago-Tribune citing a Police Department statement. “First responders determined that the subject was deceased.” The cause of the death is under investigation by the office of the Chief Medical Examiner.
