Sarah Hatton Biography – Sarah Hatton Wiki
Sarah Hatton is a willow weaver, willow basketmaker, willow grower, chair seating expert and expert on BBC1’s The Repair Shop. She also appeared on an episode of Countryfile filmed on the Gwent Levels, where she collaborated with fellow willow weaver Mel Bastier to create a female brinker willow sculpture.
Sarah is the founder of Hatton Willow, a small business nestled in the heart of Caerphilly within the South Wales Valleys. She makes willow baskets entirely by hand, utilising locally sourced materials cultivated across the UK. Additionally, she offers willow weaving courses at the Nantgarw China Works Museum in South Wales.
Sarah was introduced to willow weaving by chance in 2008, igniting a passion for crafting humble sticks into beautiful creations. She immersed herself in mastering the art of basketry and established Hatton Willow in 2012, showcasing her craftsmanship at local events and workshops. In 2015, she left her IT career to focus entirely on her art.
In an interview with the BBC, Sarah spoke about her background and how she gained the specialist skills she has. She said: “I came to willow weaving in a roundabout way. I was working as a Manager in IT and went to the flower show in Cardiff with my mum and made a willow flower. I was fascinated that you could take a load of sticks that had been cut in a field and use that to weave something so strong. I was hooked.
“I went on course after course with many of the top basket makers from all over the world. I was fascinated that there were so many different types and styles of baskets from sturdy baskets that would last a lifetime to quite delicate baskets.”

Sarah joined the cast of The Repair Shop in 2018. Speaking about how she got involved in The Repair Shop, she told the BBC: “In 2018 I received an email from a researcher working for Ricochet. After a few emails back and forth they asked if I could film myself talking about repairing a basket.
“Feeling too awkward to ask someone to film me, I went into my garage workshop, tied my mobile phone to a ladder with baling twine and filmed myself. I sent it off not quite believing that I could possibly be on The Repair Shop as we watched the programme as a family and absolutely loved it. I was so excited and proud when I was asked to become an expert.”
