Sally Abe is chef at The Pem Restaurant, a contemporary British restaurant at Conrad London St. James hotel near Westminster Abbey & Buckingham Palace. She competed on Great British Menu in 2020, 2022 and 2025.

After studying hospitality management and culinary arts in Sheffield, Sally worked at The Savoy and then Claridge’s before she began five years under Brett Graham at two Michelin starred The Ledbury. In 2017, Sally took the reigns as Head Chef of The Harwood Arms in Fulham, London’s only Michelin-starred pub at the time, where she successfully maintained its star throughout her tenure.

In 2021, Sally took on the role of Consultant Chef at The Pem, located within the Conrad London St. James hotel. At The Pem, she leads a predominantly female team, reflecting her commitment to championing female empowerment within the culinary industry. The menus at The Pem showcase the foundations of historic British cuisine.

Sally garnered acclaim as the “Chef to Watch” at the National Restaurant Awards 2019 and was nominated for the prestigious GQ Chef of the Year 2021. Sally separated from her husband Matt Abe in 2022. “It’s a real shame, but unfortunately they’ve just drifted apart,” a source close to the pair told the Daily Mail. “There’s nobody else involved — Matt and Sally have simply decided they’re better off as friends.”

Originally from Mansfield, Nottingham, chef Sally Abé is a contestant on Great British Menu 2025 on BBC Two. She will be competing for Central and Eastern England alongside David Taylor, Chef Director, Grace and Savour; Harry Kirkpatrick, Head Chef, Trinity; and Thom Bateman, Chef Owner, The Flintlock. This is her third time on the show, having previously competed in 2020 and 2022.

This is Sally’s third time in the competition, with her second time resulting in cooking the mini courses at the banquet held at Alexander Palace. For this year’s competition, Sally aims to present dishes that reflect her philosophy of modernising traditional British flavours, utilising the finest local ingredients, and showcasing the culinary heritage of her home region.

Sally revealed the news on Instagram, writing: “I’m overjoyed to announce that I’m competing on Series 20 of Great British Menu, repping the Central region on BBC Two from Tuesday, 4th March.

“This is my third time competing, which means either I love a challenge or I have completely lost my grip on reality. Expect high drama, aggressive plating, and me internally screaming while smiling. Will I rise like a perfect soufflé or collapse like my willpower around good cheese? WHO KNOWS.

“Tune in for thrills, spills, and possibly my final shred of sanity leaving my body on national TV.”

Chef Sally Abé was one of four chefs representing The Central Region on Great British Menu 2022. She competed against Liam Dillon, Benjamin Orpwood and Harvey Perttola. This was her second time on the BBC Two show, having taken part for the first time in 2020.
