Reuben De Melo is a mine worker and singer-songwriter from Perth, Western Australia, as well as a contestant on The Voice Australia 2024. Originally from Maina-Curtorim, Goa, India, Reuben moved to Australia when he was 11 years old.
With music naturally a part of the furniture at home, Reuben credits the Western Indian and Portuguese influences from his youth for his introduction to a “melting pot” of music.
“You’re talking about tribal, reggae, Caribbean style music and a lot of old traditional folk,” Reuben told PerthNow. “Dad taught me the guitar. And he taught me the House of the Rising Sun.”
Reuben said his journey through music was “put into motion” by the loss of close friend and emerging footy player Josh Henderson in 2012.
“When he passed away, I sang at his wake and that sort of set my music journey and fuelled my passion for music,” he said. “His spirit lived through my music, so I believed I had to do it justice.”

“I’m really hoping that this journey that I’m on can also propel her and allow her to express herself and her music to shine as well because she’s an incredible songwriter,” he said.
