Priya Winsor Biography – Priya Winsor Wiki
Priya Winsor is a Canadian pastry chef, chocolatier and contestant on Season 11 of Spring Baking Championship. She is the founder of Compass Chocolates, a woman-owned business specializing in handcrafted chocolates.
Originally from Newfoundland, Priya said she and her family moved to St. Albert nine years ago after fleeing the 2016 Fort McMurray wildfire. She earned her bakery and pastry arts diploma from the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT). A life making chocolate was never part of the plan, but she knew she was on to something when she won a chocolate competition in her first year at NAIT. After graduating, she went on to study chocolate in Montreal.
When Priya returned to Alberta, the COVID-19 pandemic hit. She started Compass Chocolates in 2020. Compass Chocolates focuses on using flavours from home and around the world, “exploring food stories and traditions from every corner of the globe.” She named the company in honour of finding connections, even at a time when people were kept apart from each other.
In 2022, Compass Chocolates launched the Ukraine chocolate bar, with all profits going to World Central Kitchen to provide emergency food relief for people in Ukraine. The bar, made with sourdough breadcrumbs using locally sourced red fife wheat, milk chocolate, toasted brown butter and a hint of Newfoundland sea salt, raised over $6,000 for the cause. In 2023, Compass Chocolates was named among the Tomato’s Top 100.
A certified Chocolatier and diplomaed Pastry Chef, Priya serves as a judge for Provincial Skills. She is a member of the Provincial Apprenticeship Committee and Provincial Technical Committee, with the goal of maintaining high standards in the trades for generations to come. She has stayed connected to NAIT as a guest speaker for the Baking and Pastry Arts program as well as a member of the advisory committee.
