Philip Serrell is an English antiques dealer, auctioneer and television presenter. He is known for his regular appearances on antiques television programmes such as BBC’s Bargain Hunt, The Antiques Road Trip and Flog It! as well as being a winning competitor on Celebrity Mastermind! He has also appeared on Flipping Profit and Celebrity Antiques Road Trip.

Philip studied at Loughborough College of Physical Education and after graduation started his career working as a P.E. and Geography teacher.

However, after realising this was most definitely not the career for him, he began to pursue auctioneering. His first job saw him cleaning out the cattle pens at a local livestock market, working for the Bromyard-based firm Bentley Hobbs and Mytton. Here he gained a huge amount of experience working with some very interesting characters.

From there, Philip went back to college and re-qualified as a chartered surveyor, specialising as a fine art and antiques valuer. After a few years, Philip was able to set up a business on his own, establishing ‘Philip Serrell Auctioneers and Valuers’ in 1995.

Since then, the business has gone from strength to strength and now specialises in the sale and valuation of Royal Worcester Porcelain, as well as other items of Fine Art and Antiques, with clients worldwide. He runs the auctioneering business from his saleroom in Malvern.

Auctions help Philip indulge his other great hobby: collecting classic cars of all types. His pride and joy is a green Aston Martin bought by his father-in-law during the 1960s. Philip admits his collecting habits go beyond cars, describing his house as ‘full of tat’, including a few half-decent bits, a wooden leg for a sheep, and an Edwardian optician’s board.

Philip has written three books based on his life as a country auctioneer – “An Auctioneer’s Lot”, “Sold to the Man with the Tin Leg” and “What Am I Bid? My Life Under The Hammer”.

He is also a fundraiser for local charities, in particular for St Richard’s Hospice in Worcester of which he is a Patron. He is also a Trustee of the Museum of Royal Worcester.

In December 2016, the television antiques expert revealed on Twitter his daughter’s long-term battle with anorexia. He shared a touching photo showing his daughter Clementine at the height of her eating disorder and a more recent snap of her looking healthier.

In his touching tweet, Philip wrote: ‘Anorexic daughter on left 4 years ago and today’s version. I know it’s as boring as hell but v proud of @clemserrell.’
