Michael Johnsen Rape Allegations

On March 24, 2021, Blue Mountains Labor MP Trish Doyle revealed allegations that Upper Hunter MP Michael Johnsen raped a sex worker at a secluded Blue Mountains lookout in September 2019. Doyle said she had been contacted 18 months ago by a woman who alleged she had been sexually assaulted by an MP in the Berejiklian government.

In the unannounced speech, Doyle did not name the MP, but outlined details of the alleged incident including that he had made contact with the woman via the adult classified website Locanto and arranged to meet her on his way home from Sydney.

The man was offering $200 for “oral s_x only”, Doyle told Parliament. “She tells me she made herself clear that she was not willing to have penetrative s_x with him. However, towards the end the man moved around behind her and assaulted her in a way she had not consented to,” she said.

Doyle told Parliament the sex worker did not consent to penetrative s_x and although was initially reluctant to go to the police, she has since reported the matter and it is now being investigated.

NSW Police later confirmed the investigation was ongoing and had begun after the woman reported the incident in September 2020. The NSW Police released the following statement: “Detectives from the Child Abuse and Sex Crimes Squad are investigating allegations of sexual violence against a woman in the Blue Mountains in September 2019.

“The matter was reported and referred to the squad in late September 2020 and has been under investigation since. As the inquiries are ongoing, we are not in a position to provide any further details.”

Johnsen identified himself as the NSW MP under investigation by the NSW Police Child Abuse and Sex Crimes Squad over the incident in September 2019.

On 24 March 2021, Michael Johnsen announced in a statement that he was standing aside temporarily due to an ongoing police investigation into allegations of rape against him. “I am devastated by these allegations,” Johnsen said in a statement. “I have voluntarily spoken with NSW Police and I have and will continue to fully cooperate with their enquiries.”

“I am confident any investigation will conclude that I am an innocent party. Without admission, I have chosen to step aside from my Parliamentary Secretary role, and will not sit in the Nationals Party Room nor the Joint Party Room. I will be taking leave effective immediately for a short duration. As the matter is with the NSW Police I will make no further public comment.”
