Megan Russell is a British archaeologist and expert on the BBC’s Digging for Britain. She is a lecturer in Biological Anthropology at Bournemouth University (BU). She previously held various roles at the university, including Osteology Lab Demonstrator, Finds Processor, Research Assistant, and Laboratory Demonstrator.
Prior to joining Bournemouth University, Megan was a graduate archaeologist at Museum of London Archaeology (MOLA) in Northampton, England, United Kingdom.
Megan received a Bachelor’s degree in Archaeology from the University of Southampton in 2019 and a Master’s of Science in Bioarchaeology (Osteoarchaeology) from Bournemouth University in 2020. She is currently pursuing her Doctor of Philosophy in Experimental Archaeology and Wellbeing at Bournemouth University.
Megan developed ‘The Sanctuary – Heritage, Craft and Wellbeing Hub’ at Bournemouth University, as part of a wider study into the benefits of outdoor craft activities on general wellbeing. The sessions include a wide range of traditional skills and crafts, including flint knapping, evidence of which dates to humans who were fashioning tools over 2 million years ago.
Megan and fellow BU staff Jon Milward were nominated for the 2025 Archaeological Achievement Awards, in the Public Dissemination or Presentation category, presented by the Council for British Archaeology. Meg and Jon were nominated for their Instagram and TikTok-based series Stratmates, which highlights archaeological finds, addresses challenges within the discipline, and sparks conversations about equality and wellbeing in the field.
