Maura Healey is the 45th attorney general of Massachusetts. She was sworn in as attorney general on January 21, 2015, becoming the first openly LGBTQ+ attorney general in the United States. She is running for Governor of Massachusetts.

Healey grew up in Hampton Falls, New Hampshire, as the oldest of six children. After graduating from Winnacunnet High School, she attended Harvard College, where she was co-captain of the basketball team. She went on to play professional basketball in Austria for two years as a 5’4” starting point guard before returning to the US to earn her JD from Northeastern University School of Law.

Healey began her legal career clerking for Judge David Mazzone in the US District Court for Massachusetts. She then spent seven and a half years working as an associate and junior partner at a private firm, focusing on litigation and securities. Healey also served as Special Assistant District Attorney in Middlesex County.

In 2007, Healey became the Chief of the Massachusetts Office of Attorney General Civil Rights Division. In this role, she spearheaded the state’s successful challenge to the federal Defense of Marriage Act and argued the case in federal court.

Healey was promoted within the Attorney General’s office to Chief of the Public Protection & Advocacy Bureau in 2012, and was later appointed Chief of the Business and Labor Bureau. In this role, she supervised 250 lawyers and staff members dedicated to consumer protection, fair labor, environmental protection, and economic development, among others. As a fierce women’s rights advocate, Healey defended the Massachusetts Buffer Zone law, which protects women from harassment at reproductive health care centers. She also led initiatives against predatory lenders, which resulted in the modification of thousands of mortgages and the halt of hundreds of foreclosures.

On January 21, 2015, Healey was sworn in as Attorney General. Since being sworn in, Healey has tackled issues including the heroin and prescription drug abuse epidemic, escalating health care costs, workers’ rights and student loan costs. She has focused on strengthening consumer protections and on improving the Massachusetts’s criminal justice system.
